In the 1960s a Russian physicist by the name of Nikolai Kardashev devised a system of cla$sifying all civilizations in the universe based on their consumption of energy. It is postulated that as a civilization grows and expands both in numbers and technologically, more energy is required. By the same token, the more energy a civilization has, the faster it can grow.

Kardashev cla$sifies the three main types of civilizations as such:

Type I: A civilization that has harnessed the power of all the energy available on its planet (by Earth’s standards, about 10^16 watts). This means that it can control and extract energy from everything, including the weather. Once a civilization reaches Type I, it tends to stay as such for as long as necessary in order to resolve domestic (essentially global) problems, such as racial and nationalistic conflicts of interest. There would be a single language spoken by an economically interdependent world where countries become moot and trade barriers are eliminated. Once the species unifies as a planet, space colonization will begin.

Type II: A civilization that harnesses the power of an entire star (about 10^26 watts). A Type II civilization has at its disposal about ten billion times the energy of a Type I. In order to fully utilize the net energy output of a star, it is conceivable that a civilization would dismantle the matter of a large planet in its solar system, and construct a Dyson sphere, which would enclose the star and absorb its light and heat energy. At this stage, the civilization may have developed an advanced spacecraft propulsion method, using antimatter/matter drive to develop a 100% energy efficient vehicle.

Type III: At this point the society is spread out over a decent portion of its galaxy. It harnesses the power of a plethora of stars and other celestial bodies, or about 10^36 watts. Because it would be diluted across light years of space, Type III civilizations must bridge a communications gap, and it is likely that its members might break off (even if unintentionally) to colonize elsewhere.

Type IV (colonization of multiple galaxies, 10^46 watts) and Type V (colonization of the entire universe, 10^56) do exist, but are likely too taxing on a civilization. A uniform sense of race and genetic makeup is impossible under these diffused circ.umstances.

Presently, Earth is considered to be a Type 0.7 civilization. Leading scientists calculate that we’ll achieve Type I by 2100-2200, Type II by 3000-8000, and Type III by 100000-1000000.

Clearly, it requires seemingly insurmountable stability within a society in order to achieve Type II, where extended space travel is possible. As$uming a society doesn’t collapse on itself, or some other kind of disaster does not eradicate the species, how likely is it that a nearby Type II society exists AND would have interest in studying humans on earth?

Just throwing a little food for thought out there.

Just some food to "think about"
